Couplet Patriotique
February 2002, five months after September 11, I traveled to the United States and visited four states: California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
America and the world were no longer the same after September 11, 2001.
Struck by the heightened American patriotism following the attack on the Twin Towers,
I photographed the houses adorned with the Star-Spangled Banner as I wandered, without a specific itinerary. The shock was immense and the repercussions profound. Even the most remote regions proudly and determinedly displayed their solidarity with American values.
My images are photographs of faces. The connection is frontal, the image is stable. Shots that do not capsize and where no upheaval is possible. Patriotism against all odds. The strength of global power at every window, in every home.
“Patriotic Couplet” develops the feeling of memory, the feeling of sacrifice, of duty and of belonging to the Nation.
